For most people, writing does not come naturally. It is rare to find an individual (without adequate training) who can write and produce a polished piece of work in one sitting. Writing can be a huge struggle, as it involves the need to transfer thoughts to paper and convey your message clearly and accurately. When compared to speaking, writing is so much more complex, as it requires a more formal organisation of the text material.
My goal for this chapter is to give you guidance on how to become a better writer. In order to do this, you will first need to understand the writing process, which will be discussed in greater details in the first part of this chapter. In the second part, I will give you practical tips on how to come up with that first draft and how to overcome potential challenges/issues during the writing stage, such as how to overcome a writer’s block.
Although the process of editing can be thought of as an activity that is part of writing, for the sake of simplicity, I will differentiate the two and deal with them separately. As such, after reading this chapter, you should continue to read Chap. 11 (How to Edit), to learn how you can transform your first draft into a final version.
On a final note, please do not expect miracles. For sure, you will not become a good writer, just by reading these two chapters. Writing is a skill that you will need to develop further, through time and practice.
